New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) Global PC shipments hit 59 million units in the first quarter of 2025, marking a 4.8 percent increase compared to the first quarter of 2024, according to a report released on Monday.
The US PC shipments increased by 12.6 percent, reaching 16 million units in the same period, as indicated by preliminary data from Gartner.
According to Rishi Padhi, Research Principal at Gartner, “The growth in the PC market during the first quarter of 2025 was propelled by significant shipment increases in two major markets, the US and Japan, albeit for different reasons.”
In the US, the surge in shipments was attributed to vendors ramping up inventory in anticipation of tariff announcements, resulting in a 12.6 percent year-over-year increase.
Despite this growth and strong overall revenue, demand from end-users remained cautious, even with the additional impetus from enterprises upgrading PCs for Windows 11, Padhi observed.
Meanwhile, in Japan, robust demand for business PCs, driven by replacements for Windows 11 and the rise of Chromebooks, contributed to a shipment growth of 15.6 percent.
Padhi further noted that vendors involved in the GIGA education Chromebook replacement programme seized this opportunity and offered upgrades for older devices, thus maintaining market momentum.
According to Gartner’s analysis, there were no significant shifts in the rankings of the top six vendors globally during the first quarter of 2025.
In the global PC shipment landscape, Lenovo exhibited the highest growth rate among the top six vendors at 9.6 percent year-over-year, while Acer recorded the slowest growth at 1.9 percent.
Additionally, in the US market, HP maintained the leading position with a 25.1 percent market share, followed closely by Dell with 23.9 percent, as highlighted in the report.
The report emphasized that Windows 11 upgrades and increased inventory to mitigate the impact of US tariffs were pivotal in driving PC growth.
