Ahmedabad, Aug 3 (NationPress) With an impressive coastline stretching 2,340 kilometers, Gujarat is playing a pivotal role in the advancement of the blue economy in India.
Ranked second nationally in marine fish production, the state is poised to further strengthen its position under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
Over the past four years, Gujarat has consistently achieved an average annual fish production of 8.56 lakh metric tonnes. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the total fish yield in the state reached approximately 9,07,901 metric tonnes.
Looking ahead, projections estimate fish production will rise to about 10,36,773 metric tonnes in 2024-25 (October-September), comprising around 7,64,343 metric tonnes of marine fish and 2,72,430 metric tonnes of inland fish.
The Gujarat government has introduced various initiatives and policies aimed at boosting fish production while enhancing the economic welfare of local fishermen.
Programs like the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) are designed to improve productivity and tackle challenges faced by the fishing sector.
PMMSY focuses on bridging critical gaps in the fisheries value chain, from production and quality to technology, infrastructure, and marketing.
The scheme aims to modernize and fortify the value chain, improve traceability, and create a robust fisheries management framework, ensuring the social and economic prosperity of fishermen.
Under PMMSY, the Centre has allocated an outlay of Rs 897.54 crore for various projects in Gujarat from 2020-21 to 2024-25.
Additionally, Rs 50 crore has been earmarked for the state under PMMSY for the year 2025-26, further propelling fisheries activities.
To maximize the potential of Gujarat’s extensive coastline, the state government has initiated several measures, including subsidies for the purchase of kerosene and petrol, improved road and electricity access, and infrastructure upgrades for small fishermen's harbors.
Moreover, four new fishing harbors are under construction at Madhavad, Navabandar, Veraval-2, and Sutrapada.
Additional initiatives include support for establishing Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), assistance for purchasing essential medicines and feed for shrimp farming, and aid for cage culture.
Furthermore, support is being extended for setting up modern boat building yards, installing blast freezers and cold storage for fishermen, and providing nets to fishing communities.
