India's Pharmaceutical Investment Surges Beyond PLI Targets, Minister Reports
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 20 (NationPress) The production-linked incentive (PLI) initiatives in India’s pharmaceutical sector have successfully attracted total investments of Rs 41,943 crore across both brownfield and greenfield projects, as reported to Parliament on Friday.
These investments significantly surpass the initially set goal of Rs 17,275 crore over the scheme's six-year duration, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers, Anupriya Patel, stated in a written response to the Lok Sabha.
The incentive program has generated Rs 3,35,036 crore in sales from 1,988 products, according to the statement from the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers.
This total includes exports worth Rs 2,15,248 crore, and highlights the manufacturing of 726 Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), Key Starting Materials (KSMs), and Drug Intermediates (DIs), with 191 items produced for the first time in India.
The sales of these APIs, KSMs, and DIs have led to cumulative domestic sales amounting to Rs 28,067 crore, thereby aiding in reducing imports within the sector.
Launched in 2021, the PLI scheme for Pharmaceuticals is designed to enhance India’s manufacturing capacity by increasing investments and production in the pharmaceuticals field.
This scheme aims to incentivize the production of high-value medicines, complex generics, and active pharmaceutical ingredients, while the PLI scheme for Bulk Drugs, approved in 2020, focuses on critical KSMs, DIs, and APIs to lessen reliance on single sources.
Under the PLI scheme for Bulk Drugs, Rs 4,814 crore has already been invested in greenfield projects, surpassing the commitment of Rs 4,329.95 crore across six years, the statement added.
Overall, a total capacity of 91,077 metric tonnes per annum is committed for 33 products, exceeding the originally planned capacity of 82,270 metric tonnes per annum for 41 products designated under the scheme.
This initiative has led to the establishment of six new manufacturing units in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, categorized as an aspirational district.
