The International Week of Science and Peace was first celebrated in 1986 as part of the observance of the International Year of Peace.
Following the success of the 1986 observance, the organizers continued their efforts in subsequent years. In December 1988, the General Assembly adopted resolution 43/61, proclaiming the “International Week of Science and Peace” to occur every year during the week in which November 11 falls.
“The annual observance of the International Week of Science and Peace significantly contributes to promoting peace. The week encourages enhanced academic exchanges on a universally important subject while also raising awareness about the relationship between science and peace among the public,” the UN stated.
