The Department of Posts has launched drone-based delivery of mail and parcels on the Mandi-Rehardhar route in Himachal Pradesh, marking the first operational step in a wider plan to extend the technology across remote and difficult terrains, according to an official statement released on Saturday, 13 June. The initiative is being rolled out under Union Minister of Communications and DoNER Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and is designed to strengthen last-mile postal connectivity in hilly regions.

The Pilot Route

The inaugural corridor links Mandi Head Post Office with Rehardhar Branch Post Office, covering a distance of approximately 12 km. Under conventional transport, this journey takes over two hours through challenging mountain terrain. With drone delivery, the same distance is now completed in just 7 minutes, with real-time tracking enabled throughout.

Announcing the launch on social media platform X, Scindia described the initiative as a technology-driven transformation in postal services. 'An absolute pleasure to announce the launch of drone-based mail and parcel delivery by India Post on the Mandi-Rehardhar route in Himachal Pradesh,' he wrote. He noted that the project arose from ground-level feedback: 'What makes this environmentally sustainable initiative particularly meaningful is that it emerged directly from feedback shared by our Gramin Dak Sevaks and Postal Assistants.' Scindia also framed the effort within the government's broader digital governance agenda, stating it was 'guided by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi' to connect 'the remotest corners of Bharat' to a 'rapidly transforming nation.'

Expansion Plan

The Mandi-Rehardhar corridor is the pilot phase of a significantly larger rollout. Around 150 drone delivery routes are planned across Himachal Pradesh and Assam over the next two to three months. The Ministry of Communications said the drone system is expected to reduce terrain-related delays, improve real-time tracking, and provide a more sustainable logistics solution for postal services in geographically challenging areas.

Impact on Remote Communities

Officials said the initiative will strengthen access to essential postal services for local communities in mountainous regions, supporting what the ministry described as 'greater social and economic inclusion.' The use of drones also addresses a long-standing operational challenge for India Post — delivering reliably to areas where road infrastructure is either absent or seasonally inaccessible. Notably, the feedback-driven design process, involving frontline workers such as Gramin Dak Sevaks and Postal Assistants, sets this rollout apart from top-down technology deployments.

With the pilot underway, attention will shift to how quickly the 150-route expansion can be operationalised across two states.
