India to lead global electronics supply chain: Vaishnaw at Google AI Hub launch
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday declared that India is poised to become a major trusted value chain and supply chain partner to the world in electronic manufacturing, citing strong policy support and visionary leadership. He made the remarks at the ground-breaking ceremony of the Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, held in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, senior officials, and industry leaders.
India's Electronics Manufacturing Momentum
Vaishnaw highlighted that India has already established itself as a global leader in IT services and is now rapidly advancing in electronics manufacturing. He noted that mobile phones have become one of India's top export items, and that nearly 50% of domestic electronic demand is now being met through local production — a significant milestone in the country's import substitution journey.
Under the Semiconductor Mission, commercial production has already commenced within India. The Minister emphasised that India is fast becoming a trusted partner in semiconductor and electronics production, and called upon global technology companies — including Google — to manufacture their servers, GPUs, and chips within the country.
The Google Cloud AI Hub: Scale and Partnerships
The Google Cloud India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam represents an estimated investment of $15 billion and is being developed in partnership with Adani ConneX and Airtel Nxtra. The project will include a 1 GW hyperscale AI data centre in Visakhapatnam. The Andhra Pradesh state government has allocated approximately 600 acres of land across the Turluvada, Rambilli, and Adavivaram areas for the facility.
