New Delhi, June 17 (NationPress) Arundhati Bhattacharya, President and CEO at Salesforce-South Asia, remarked on Tuesday that the digital landscape in India has witnessed significant growth over the past 11 years, thanks to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In an interview with IANS during an event, Bhattacharya, who was recently awarded the Padma Shri, one of India's most prestigious civilian honors, stated that the nation now boasts one of the largest digitally empowered populations globally.

"This evolution — driven by robust policy initiatives, extensive digital infrastructure development, and relentless innovation — has positioned India at the forefront of the global digital economy," she conveyed to IANS.

Bhattacharya, previously the Chairperson of the State Bank of India (SBI), further emphasized that the foundation established over the last decade is fostering an environment for technologies like AI to flourish, with skilling being absolutely essential.

“The skills needed today differ vastly from those required a few years back. Therefore, it’s imperative not only to train the youth but also to reskill those already in employment,” she added.

Recent reports from Salesforce indicate that over 92% of software development leaders in India anticipate that AI agents will become as vital to app development as traditional software tools. Additionally, leaders in India’s human resource sector expect the adoption of agentic AI to increase by 383% by 2027.

The cloud software giant operates its own skilling platform, Trailhead, and collaborates with the National Skill Development Mission, AICTE for internships, and Nasscom.

"We’re partnering with over 3,000 colleges where our courses serve as credit electives. These collaborations ensure extensive access to pertinent training," Bhattacharya mentioned during the interview.

She also pointed out that increasing the participation of women in the AI workforce necessitates targeted initiatives — including mentoring, fostering inclusive skilling environments, offering flexible job opportunities, and actively promoting diversity.

When asked about India's potential to emerge as the AI capital of the world in the future, she affirmed that India can achieve any goal it sets.

“The crucial question is — how are we enabling and empowering our populace? If we deliver the right policies, opportunities, and ensure extensive skill development, then yes, India undoubtedly has the potential to become the AI capital of the world. The scale is present, the ambition exists, and with proper cultivation, the results can follow,” Bhattacharya concluded.

Reflecting on her Padma Shri award, she expressed that it was completely unforeseen.

“The government’s decision to confer this honour upon me fills me with immense gratitude. It’s a moment of pride — not just for myself but for every professional striving to make a difference,” she remarked.
