How Did India’s Fish Production More Than Double to 195 Lakh Tonnes in 11 Years?

New Delhi, July 9 (NationPress) India’s fish production has astonishingly increased from 95.79 lakh tonnes in FY 2013-14 to an unprecedented 195 lakh tonnes in FY 2024-25, showcasing the triumph of the nation’s ‘blue revolution’ initiated by the government, as stated in an official announcement made on Wednesday, just before the National Fish Farmers Day.

Inland fisheries and aquaculture have experienced a remarkable 140 percent growth over the past 11 years, underlining the potential of India’s water resources and the government’s proactive measures, the statement further elaborated.

The seafood export sector has also achieved significant milestones, surpassing Rs 60,500 crore and reinforcing India’s position as a global leader in shrimp exports. Shrimp production has escalated by an impressive 270 percent in the last decade, creating numerous job opportunities and uplifting the fishing community across the country, according to the statement.

The government remains committed to revolutionizing the fisheries sector, having invested a total of Rs 38,572 crore since 2015.

The Department of Fisheries, part of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAH&D), is commemorating 'National Fish Farmers Day 2025' at the ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA) in Bhubaneswar on July 10. This event will be honored by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, alongside Ministers of State Professor S.P. Singh Baghel and George Kurian.

During the celebrations, the Union Minister will unveil a series of important initiatives in the fisheries sector. This includes the introduction of new Fisheries Clusters, the release of the ICAR Training Calendar, and guidelines on seed certification and hatchery operations, all aimed at ensuring quality, standardization, and capacity enhancement within the fisheries industry.

The Union Minister will also recognize fisheries beneficiaries, such as traditional fishers, cooperatives/FFPOs, KCC cardholders, and promising fisheries startups. Furthermore, virtual foundation stones will be laid and selected PMMSY-supported fisheries projects will be inaugurated, marking a significant step towards infrastructure development, entrepreneurship enhancement, and inclusive growth in this sector.

Singh will deliver keynote speeches, emphasizing the sector's advancements while sharing valuable insights into the latest trends, best practices, and upcoming opportunities in the fisheries domain. Senior officials from various state governments will also be in attendance for the event.
