New Delhi, Feb 5 (NationPress) The financial assistance programs offered by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) have significantly contributed to a 47.3% increase in India's fruit and vegetable exports over the last five years, as reported by the government.

As per the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the export of fresh fruits and vegetables has reached 123 countries in FY2023-24.

In the past three years, Indian fresh produce has penetrated 17 new markets, including nations such as Brazil, Georgia, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, Czech Republic, and Ghana.

This remarkable growth has been facilitated through a variety of strategies such as participating in international trade fairs, actively engaging in market access discussions, and organizing buyer-seller meets, according to the ministry.

The Department of Commerce, in collaboration with APEDA, offers financial aid to member exporters nationwide for promoting the export of its scheduled products, which includes fruits and vegetables, under the Agriculture and Processed Foods Export Promotion Scheme of APEDA for the 15th Finance Commission Cycle (2021-22 to 2025-26).

“These initiatives have resulted in a remarkable 47.3% growth in the volume of fruit and vegetable exports from 2019-20 to 2023-24,” the ministry stated.

The increase in value over the last five years stands at 41.50%.

Key states contributing to fruit and vegetable production include Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Karnataka.

The Department of Commerce is closely collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare to prioritize agricultural products for market access negotiations, achieving entry into several new markets over the past three years.

Examples include Indian potatoes and onions in Serbia; baby corn and fresh bananas in Canada; pomegranate arils in Australia, USA, Serbia, and New Zealand; as well as whole pomegranates in Australia via irradiation treatment.
