Mumbai, June 2 (NationPress) The green economy in India is experiencing rapid expansion, projected to attain a remarkable value of $1 trillion by 2030, and an astonishing $15 trillion by 2070, as per a recent report released on Monday.
In line with this monumental growth, India is anticipated to generate a significant number of green jobs—approximately 7.29 million by the financial year 2027-28 and 35 million by 2047, according to findings from NLB Services.
Sachin Alug, CEO of NLB Services, stated: "Over the past 4–5 years, the landscape of green jobs has transitioned from niche roles to mainstream career opportunities in sectors such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, and sustainable infrastructure. The key change has been in the required skill sets."
Alug emphasized that today's green workforce requires both sustainability knowledge and digital competence, asserting that the integration of technologies like AI, IoT, blockchain, GIS, and data-driven tools is setting the stage for innovative, modern green careers.
As the green sector continues to grow, industries are not only investing in green technologies and renewable energy but also prioritizing the development of a skilled workforce to fulfill the increasing demand.
This evolution is prompting companies to adapt their hiring strategies. Employers are increasingly valuing practical green skills and hands-on experience over traditional degrees.
Many organizations are collaborating with educational institutions to equip the youth with sustainability skills, while also investing in inclusive hiring and re-skilling initiatives, as highlighted in the report.
The employment outlook in this sector is more robust than earlier forecasts. In 2024, the green sector was expected to experience an annual growth of 15–20 percent in job demand.
However, new projections indicate an even more rapid increase, particularly in areas such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, green construction, waste management, and sustainable textiles.
While the majority of green jobs are concentrated in major cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi, smaller cities such as Jaipur, Indore, Visakhapatnam, Coimbatore, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, and Ahmedabad are also emerging as important hubs for green employment.
Tier II and Tier III cities are projected to contribute 35-40 percent of the anticipated 7.29 million jobs by FY28, driven by growth in sustainable agriculture, logistics, and warehousing, according to the report.
The range of green job roles is becoming increasingly diverse. There is a growing demand for professionals in sectors such as ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) analytics, climate data analysis, and green technology, with expected annual growth rates of 20–30 percent.
