India's Mobile Phone Exports Skyrocket by 127 Times in a Decade: Ashwini Vaishnaw
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 11 (NationPress) India's mobile phone exports have experienced an extraordinary increase over the last decade, skyrocketing over 127 times from approximately Rs 0.01 lakh crore in 2014-15 to nearly Rs 2 lakh crore in 2024-25, as stated in Parliament on Wednesday.
In response to a Lok Sabha inquiry, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that this remarkable export growth showcases the effectiveness of the government's initiatives to bolster electronics manufacturing through programs like 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'.
These strategies aim to establish a comprehensive ecosystem for electronics production within the nation.
The government reports that India has evolved from being a net importer of mobile phones to a net exporter over the past 11 years.
“Today, India stands as the world’s second-largest mobile manufacturing hub,” he noted.
During this timeframe, the total production of electronics goods in India grew approximately sixfold, from about Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to around Rs 11.3 lakh crore by 2024-25.
“Electronics exports also surged nearly eight times, escalating from Rs 0.38 lakh crore to roughly Rs 3.3 lakh crore,” the minister added.
Vaishnaw mentioned that India commenced its electronics manufacturing journey with completed products, but the focus has now shifted towards the development of modules, sub-modules, components, and even raw materials, tools, and machinery essential for the manufacturing processes.
The government has initiated various programs aimed at strengthening domestic electronics manufacturing.
These include the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing and IT hardware, the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors, and the Electronics Manufacturing Clusters Scheme.
Under the PLI scheme for IT hardware, three approved applicants have established manufacturing facilities in Maharashtra, all of which are MSMEs.
“International firms have also begun producing items such as laptops and servers in India,” it was reported.
