India's Renewable Energy Capacity Surges 16% to Reach 209 GW in 2024

New Delhi, Jan 13 (NationPress) The total installed capacity of renewable energy in India has marked a substantial growth of 15.84%, reaching 209.44 GW as of December 2024, up from 180.80 GW in December 2023, according to a release from the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) on Monday.
For the year 2024, the total capacity added was 28.64 GW, signifying an impressive year-on-year growth of 119.46% compared to the 13.05 GW added in 2023, as per the statement.
The solar power sector led this growth, contributing 24.54 GW to the total, resulting in a 33.47% increase in its cumulative installed capacity, climbing from 73.32 GW in 2023 to 97.86 GW in 2024. Wind energy also played a role in this expansion, with an additional 3.42 GW installed in 2024, raising the total wind capacity to 48.16 GW, reflecting a growth of 7.64% from 2023, the statement detailed.
Bioenergy has demonstrated notable growth, with its installed capacity increasing from 10.84 GW in December 2023 to 11.35 GW in December 2024, marking a 4.70% rise. Small hydropower projects also experienced slight growth, with their installed capacity boosting from 4.99 GW in 2023 to 5.10 GW in 2024, representing a 2.20% increase, the statement said.
“MNRE has been implementing several key initiatives to realize Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, underscoring India’s commitment to addressing climate challenges while enhancing energy security. These numbers highlight the government’s persistent efforts to expand renewable energy capacity throughout India,” the statement further noted.
India has positioned itself as a frontrunner in the global Energy Transition, setting a goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacities by 2030, with solar energy expected to play a pivotal role in this endeavor.
States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Karnataka have emerged as leaders in solar capacity expansion, with the top 10 states accounting for 94% of total installations.
