New Delhi, Dec 29 (NationPress) India recorded its highest-ever addition of renewable energy capacity in 2025, reaching 44.51 GW (as of November), nearly doubling the 24.72 GW added in the same timeframe last year, according to government reports released on Monday.
The cumulative renewable energy capacity soared to 253.96 GW in November 2025, which marks an increase of over 23 percent compared to 205.52 GW in November 2024.
Solar energy saw a significant boost, with an addition of 34.98 GW, in contrast to 20.85 GW during the same period last year. By January 2025, solar capacity surpassed the 100 GW milestone, reaching 132.85 GW by November 2025, reflecting a growth of over 41 percent compared to 94.17 GW in November 2024, as reported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
Wind energy also experienced noteworthy expansion, with an increase of 5.82 GW compared to 3.2 GW from the previous year.
By March 2025, wind energy capacity crossed the 50 GW threshold, growing to 53.99 GW by November 2025, which is an increase of over 12.5 percent compared to 47.96 GW in November 2024.
Aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision articulated during COP-26, the government aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030.
India marked a significant milestone by having 50 percent of its total electric power installed capacity derived from non-fossil fuel sources as of June 2025, five years ahead of the 2030 target set under its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Paris Agreement.
The nation surpassed the 250 GW milestone of non-fossil energy capacity in August 2025. By November 2025, the total non-fossil power capacity reached 262.74 GW, constituting 51.5 percent of the total installed electricity capacity of 509.64 GW, as reported by the ministry.
On July 29, 2025, India achieved its highest-ever share of renewable energy in electricity production, fulfilling 51.5 percent of the country’s total electricity demand of 203 GW that day.
