  • IndiGo has cancelled thousands of flights, stranding many passengers.
  • CEO Pieter Elbers has been summoned for further inquiries.
  • Special oversight teams have been deployed to monitor the airline closely.

New Delhi, Dec 12 (NationPress) The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's aviation regulatory body, has terminated four flight inspectors tasked with overseeing the safety and operational standards of IndiGo.

This decision follows an ongoing crisis at the airline, which has had to cancel thousands of flights this month due to inadequate planning and a failure to comply with enhanced safety regulations.

As a result of these cancellations, tens of thousands of passengers have found themselves stranded across the nation.

In the meantime, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers was summoned by the DGCA on Thursday and is expected to meet with officials again on Friday.

Sources indicate that the DGCA's dismissal of the inspectors was due to negligence in their inspection and monitoring responsibilities.

To ensure closer oversight, the regulator has assigned two special teams to IndiGo’s office in Gurugram. These teams will provide daily reports to the DGCA by 6 PM. One team is tasked with monitoring various operational metrics, including fleet strength, pilot availability, crew utilization hours, training schedules, split-duty patterns, unplanned leave, standby crew, and the number of flights affected by crew shortages.

This team is also analyzing the airline's average stage length and network to assess the full extent of the operational disruption.

The second team is dedicated to evaluating the crisis's impact on passengers, which includes tracking refunds from both the airline and travel agents, compensation under Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR), on-time performance, baggage reclaim status, and overall cancellation metrics.

Additionally, IndiGo is required to cut its operations by 10% to stabilize its flight schedules and mitigate further disruptions.

Usually, the airline operates around 2,200 flights daily, meaning more than 200 flights will now be cancelled each day.

The Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu stated that passengers have experienced “significant inconvenience” due to IndiGo’s mismanagement of crew rosters, flight schedules, and communication.

After discussing the situation with CEO Pieter Elbers, the minister emphasized that the airline must adhere to all ministry directives, including fare caps and measures to assist affected passengers.

As the DGCA investigation continues and the CEO of IndiGo is called for further clarification, the airline has announced compensation for travelers who endured severe delays between December 3 and 5.

Point of View

I believe this situation underscores the urgent need for accountability and transparency in the aviation sector. The DGCA's actions reflect a commitment to uphold safety standards, yet the impact on passengers cannot be ignored. As we follow this story, it’s crucial to keep the focus on improving operational efficiency and restoring passenger trust in our airlines.
