IndiGo Takes Legal Action Against Mahindra Electric Over '6E' Usage in New EV SUV, Automaker Responds

New Delhi, Dec 3 IANS) After InterGlobe Aviation, which runs the IndiGo airline, initiated a trademark infringement lawsuit against Mahindra Electric for incorporating ‘6E’ in its forthcoming vehicle, the automaker stated on Tuesday that they do not view this as a conflict and are currently engaged in discussions with the budget airline to achieve a friendly resolution.
InterGlobe Aviation lodged the lawsuit in the Delhi High Court regarding the usage of ‘6E’ in its new vehicle named Mahindra BE 6e, which is anticipated to launch in February of the following year. The hearing for the case is scheduled for December 9, as per reports.
In a statement, Mahindra disclosed that it unveiled its electric origin SUVs, the BE 6e and XEV 9e, on November 26.
“Mahindra has sought trademark registration under class 12 (vehicles) for ‘BE 6e’, which is part of its electric origin SUV lineup. Therefore, we do not perceive a conflict as Mahindra’s mark is ‘BE 6e’, not just ‘6E’,” stated the automaker.
This fundamentally differs from IndiGo’s “6E”, which signifies an airline, thus eliminating any potential for confusion. The unique design further highlights their distinctiveness, Mahindra explained in its statement.
“We acknowledge the concerns raised by InterGlobe Aviation Limited regarding the infringement of their goodwill, which was not our intent. We are in discussions with them to find a satisfactory resolution,” the automaker added.
Last week, M&M broadened its electric vehicle range in the country by introducing two brand-new models. The base variants of the BE 6e and XEV 9e are priced at Rs 18.9 lakh and Rs 21.9 lakh (ex-showroom), respectively. The company mentioned that the BE 6e offers a range of 682 km, while the XEV 9e comes with a range of 656 km.
The automaker has committed to investing over Rs 12,000 crore in its electric vehicle (EV) sector.
