India equity markets near all-time highs as investors back growth story: PL Capital
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Indian equity markets are holding firm near record levels, with investor sentiment buoyed by robust corporate earnings, supportive policy conditions, and strong domestic macroeconomic fundamentals, according to a report released on Tuesday, 21 July by PL Capital Private Wealth. The Sensex is hovering around 78,100 and the Nifty is trading above 24,300, as markets track the Q1FY27 earnings season closely.
Markets Show Durability Despite Volatility
The PL Capital report noted that Indian benchmarks have demonstrated resilience through intermittent bouts of volatility, aided in part by the return of foreign institutional investor (FII) inflows. Retail inflation eased to 4.38% in June, staying comfortably within the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) target band, while policy stability has further reinforced market confidence.
This comes amid a broader global environment marked by geopolitical uncertainty, which the report acknowledged could introduce fresh volatility. However, it urged investors not to let short-term market swings drive long-term investment decisions.
Preferred Sectors and Structural Themes
The firm identified financial services, manufacturing, infrastructure, capital goods, defence, digital businesses, and consumption as its preferred sectors, describing them as aligned with India's structural growth trajectory. The report cited favourable demographics, sustained infrastructure spending, manufacturing-led expansion, rapid digital transformation, and healthy corporate profitability as the pillars underpinning long-term wealth creation.
Notably, the report flagged that valuations in certain market segments have turned expensive, but framed consolidation phases as buying opportunities for investors with a long-term perspective.
What the CEO Said
Inderbir Singh Jolly, CEO of PL Capital Private Wealth, said the Indian markets 'continue to have good underlying fundamentals, visibility on earnings and strong economic growth.' He added that despite a high probability of volatility driven by geopolitical developments, investment decisions should not be based on short-term market fluctuations.
Jolly recommended an effective asset allocation programme spanning equity, debt, and gold to help investors ride out volatility while participating in India's growth.
Portfolio Strategy Recommended
The report advised maintaining a well-diversified portfolio with balanced exposure across large-cap equities, selective mid-cap stocks, fixed-income instruments, and gold. Disciplined investing and strategic asset allocation were highlighted as preferable to reactive decision-making in volatile conditions.
With the Q1FY27 earnings season now underway and global macro risks still in play, market participants will be watching corporate results and RBI commentary closely for the next directional cue.
