Prof Nimit Chowdhary Critiques IYC Protest at AI Summit
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 23 (NationPress) The recent protest by the Indian Youth Congress (IYC), where members demonstrated without shirts to interrupt the AI Impact Summit, was labeled a ‘poor decision’ and ‘detrimental’ to India’s goal of becoming a leading player in artificial intelligence, according to Professor Nimit Chowdhary, Vice Chancellor of Rajasthan Technical University in Kota, on Monday.
In an interview with IANS, Chowdhary emphasized that the AI Summit transcended political matters, focusing instead on India's technological aspirations.
“Any attempt to disrupt this event or to create a spectacle that undermines its purpose was ill-conceived. I believe the IYC should have refrained from such actions. It was unequivocally a bad idea,” he stated.
The Summit attracted numerous influential technology leaders from around the world.
“Key figures from various nations attended. The protest had no relevance to democratic principles,” Chowdhary remarked.
He added that when showcasing talent and innovation, “it’s about India, the youth of India, and the country’s future. Even if there are disagreements, the best course of action would have been to avoid protests at this international platform. There are more constructive ways to express dissent, and this was certainly a display in poor taste,” he noted.
During the protest on February 20, IYC members chanted slogans concerning unemployment, inflation, and the alleged India-US trade agreement, igniting a political uproar and fierce exchanges between the BJP-led Union government and the Opposition. Delhi Police have since apprehended five individuals linked to the incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized Congress leaders for endorsing their youth wing's protest, stating, “Sadly, the leaders of the country’s oldest party are commending those who shamed the nation instead of condemning them,” he expressed.
Chowdhary praised the India AI Impact Summit as a remarkable occasion.
“It certainly conveyed a robust message that India is emerging on the global stage and is poised to be a significant player in AI discussions. This will undoubtedly bolster India’s standing in international conversations surrounding AI,” Chowdhary concluded.
