Kanda Express to deliver 440 MT onions to Agartala by Oct 18, covering 7 Tripura districts
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The first-ever Kanda Express rail consignment bound for Agartala is expected to arrive by 18 October, carrying approximately 440 metric tonnes (MT) of onions to boost supply in the northeast ahead of the festive season, according to an official statement released on Friday, 16 October. The move is part of the Department of Consumer Affairs' ongoing effort to distribute buffer onions under the Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF) and ease price pressures across the region.
Coverage Across Tripura
The incoming consignment is set to enhance market coverage across seven of Tripura's eight districts: Dhalai, South Tripura, Khowai, Unakoti, West Tripura, Gomati, and Sepahijala. The distribution is designed to supplement local supplies at key retail points and reduce price volatility ahead of peak festive demand.
Scale of the Northeast Supply Operation
The current Agartala-bound rake is not the first such effort — it follows two earlier Kanda Express rail rakes that carried 840 MT and 452 MT of onions respectively, alongside 44 truck consignments totalling 1,513.46 MT of buffer onions dispatched across the northeast. Combined, these consignments have reached key locations in Assam, Tripura, and Nagaland, including Kamrup, Guwahati, Gomati, Dimapur, Sepahijala, Kohima, Niuland, and Chumoukedima, according to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.
Price Gap Between Assam and National Average Narrows
The distribution push appears to be yielding measurable results in Assam, where retail onion prices have moderated in recent weeks. Around 12 centres in the state have recorded a price decline ranging from ₹1 to ₹8 per kg. Notably, the disparity between Assam's average retail onion price and the All-India average has narrowed significantly over two years. Two years ago, Assam's average retail price stood at ₹61.96 per kg against the All-India average of ₹54.13 per kg — a gap of ₹7.83 per kg. Currently, Assam's average retail price is ₹54.30 per kg compared to the national average of ₹53.07 per kg, reducing the gap to just ₹1.23 per kg.
Wholesale Prices Easing with Fresh Kharif Arrivals
The broader onion market is also showing signs of cooling. With fresh Kharif crop arrivals gathering pace, the All-India average mandi price has declined from a peak of approximately ₹3,600 per quintal in September to around ₹3,300 per quintal in October. The combined rail-and-road distribution strategy is aimed at improving the reach of buffer stocks and supplementing supplies in key consumption centres across the northeast. Whether these gains hold through the festive period will depend on the pace of Kharif arrivals and sustained PSF disbursements.
