Seoul, June 10 (NationPress) - On Tuesday, automaker Kia celebrated a significant milestone by hosting a roll-out ceremony for its new generation military medium tactical vehicle. This event marks the official commencement of mass production of the company’s enhanced military transport vehicle.

The ceremony took place at Kia's Autoland facility in Gwangju, located approximately 270 kilometers south of Seoul, according to the company. Kia has been involved in the development of military vehicles since the 1970s, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

The new Kia Medium Tactical Vehicle (KMTV), available in two variants, is the first model of its type to be launched in 48 years, succeeding the previous standard medium tactical vehicle introduced in 1977.

Following a contract with the South Korean Army in December 2019, Kia undertook prototype development, rigorous testing, initial trial production, and evaluation before commencing full-scale production of the new model.

The KMTV boasts robust 280-horsepower and 330-horsepower diesel engines for the 2.5-ton and 5-ton variants, respectively, coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Additionally, it includes advanced features such as around-view monitoring, air suspension seats, front and rear cameras, and an integrated navigation system. The upgraded KMTV provides an enhanced payload capacity and improved protection features, making it attractive to both domestic and international defense markets.

Starting from this month, Kia will initiate deliveries of the vehicles to the South Korean Army, with plans to broaden the supply to global clients.

“We will persist in utilizing innovative technologies to create specialized vehicles that ensure the safe transport of troops and redefine the future of military mobility,” stated a company representative.

In related news, Kia recently showcased its non-passenger military vehicles at the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) 2025 in the United Arab Emirates. The automaker exhibited the Kia Medium Tactical Vehicle (KMTV) bonnet-type bare chassis, the Kia Light Tactical Vehicle (KLTV) two-seater cargo, along with its inaugural passenger pickup truck, the Tasman, during the exhibition.
