New Delhi, December 12 (NationPress) The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, has indicated that exports of Kolhapuri chappals could reach a remarkable $1 billion annually. This potential follows a collaboration between the renowned Italian fashion brand Prada and two state-operated corporations aimed at creating exclusive, Kolhapuri-inspired sandals right here in India.
“I was thrilled to learn about the partnership between Prada and our Kolhapuri chappal artisans,” Goyal remarked.
The minister expressed his curiosity, questioning, “Why shouldn’t Kolhapuri chappals, with their stunning designs, craftsmanship, vibrant colors, comfort, and distinct presentation, become a global sensation?”
“I am delighted that Prada has recognized this potential, and we will now share the Kolhapuri legacy and designs with a worldwide audience,” he stated.
Goyal has always envisioned the possibility of achieving an export target of ₹1 billion for Kolhapuri chappals, emphasizing the need for collaboration to make this goal a reality.
After his discussions with Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, Goyal expressed optimism about this target, stating, “Once you experience wearing Kolhapuri chappals, you won’t desire anything else.”
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formalized at the Italian Consulate in Mumbai with LIDCOM (Sant Rohidas Leather Industries and Charmakar Development Corporation) and LIDKAR (Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation).
Prada’s technical team recently visited Kolhapur to examine traditional manufacturing techniques and engage with artisans and cooperative leaders.
Prada’s exclusive Kolhapuri sandal collection is set to launch in February 2026 across 40 selected stores and via its e-commerce site.
Earlier this year, Prada faced backlash for marketing Kolhapuri-style sandals at ₹1.2 lakh without acknowledging the artisans involved, prompting the company to send officials to India.
Goyal reiterated India’s commitment to a free trade agreement with the EU, highlighting aspirations for enhanced industrial and economic relations with Italy in sectors such as R&D, technology, defense, textiles, agriculture, and food processing.
