How is LG Display Tackling China's Growth in the Display Market?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Jan 12 (NationPress) The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of LG Display, Jeong Chul-dong, has committed to countering the rise of China's influence in the liquid crystal display (LCD) industry by enhancing the price competitiveness of its premium organic light-emitting diode (OLED) panels.
This statement was made during a press conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday (U.S. time) at CES 2026, where Jeong expressed his insights on the presentations by Chinese tech firms, as reported by Yonhap news agency on Monday.
Jeong remarked, “I observed that Chinese companies are putting substantial effort into improving the resolution and reducing costs of their LCD products as they strive to keep pace with OLED technology.” He acknowledged the significant increase in competition.
However, he emphasized that OLED panels maintain a technological edge over their LCD counterparts, asserting that LG Display will persist in its endeavors to lower costs for OLED products to effectively compete with Chinese challengers.
The CEO noted that these initiatives will allow LG Display to offer competitively priced OLED panels to customers, enabling them to launch affordable premium products in light of the increasing presence of budget LCD competitors.
While OLED televisions are widely regarded as premium offerings, their pricing has been seen as a barrier for consumers, who often opt for LCD products due to their affordability.
Furthermore, Jeong indicated that the company will leverage artificial intelligence (AI) technology to restructure its operations in order to achieve steady profitability.
Earlier, the display manufacturer reported an accumulated operating profit of 348.5 billion won (approximately US$238.8 million) for the period between January and September, marking the first annual turnaround since 2021.
He stated, “This year, our objective is to evolve into a technology-driven enterprise that consistently generates profits.” Beyond merely achieving profitability, he expressed the aim of building resilience against various market conditions.
Additionally, he outlined the company's proactive approach to the burgeoning humanoid robot industry, drawing on insights gained from the automotive display sector.
“Observing a variety of humanoid robots at the exhibition made me realize that the display industry must innovate accordingly,” Jeong stated. “LG Display possesses essential technologies, including those for P-OLED products, which are dependable and support curved designs for humanoid robots,” he added.
