New Delhi, Feb 16 (NationPress) The parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, Meta, has revealed an ambitious new 50,000 Km undersea cable project called 'Waterworth' aimed at enhancing digital connectivity between India and the US.
As stated by Meta, Project Waterworth is set to provide industry-leading connectivity not only to the US and India but also to Brazil, South Africa, and other vital regions.
The company emphasized, "The project Waterworth will enable greater economic cooperation, facilitate digital inclusion, and open opportunities for technological development in these regions,".
Upon completion, this project will connect five major continents and stretch over 50,000 km (exceeding the Earth's circumference), establishing itself as the world's longest subsea cable project utilizing the most advanced technology available.
In a blog post, Meta announced, "We are also deploying first-of-its-kind routing, maximizing the cable laid in deep water - at depths up to 7,000 meters - and using enhanced burial techniques in high-risk fault areas, such as shallow waters near the coast, to avoid damage from ship anchors and other hazards."
Project Waterworth represents a multi-billion-dollar, multi-year investment aimed at bolstering the scale and reliability of global digital highways by creating three new oceanic corridors equipped with the high-speed connectivity necessary for driving AI innovation globally. This project is projected to be completed by the end of this decade.
The official spokesperson of Meta noted, "Driven by India's growing demand for digital services, this investment reaffirms Meta's commitment to economic growth, resilient infrastructure, and digital inclusion, supporting India's thriving digital landscape and fostering technological innovation,".
Subsea cable projects are fundamental to global digital infrastructure, accounting for over 95 percent of intercontinental traffic across the oceans, seamlessly enabling digital communication, video experiences, online transactions, and more.
