How Does the Bairabi-Sairang Rail Link Transform Mizoram’s Connectivity?

New Delhi, Sep 13 (NationPress) Praising the significant development projects launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent trip to Mizoram and Manipur, BJP President JP Nadda celebrated Mizoram's inclusion in India’s railway network.

He took to X to announce, “PM Modi inaugurated the Bairabi-Sairang rail link, a crucial project that for the first time connects Mizoram's capital to the Indian Railways network. This initiative, alongside other developmental projects totaling Rs 9,000 crore, marks a new era of advancement for the state.

JP Nadda emphasized, “Navigating challenging hilly landscapes, this endeavor will provide the people of Mizoram with safer, quicker, and more economical travel options. It is also set to guarantee a steady flow of essential goods such as food and fertilizers.”

“I express my heartfelt appreciation to PM Modi ji for his commitment to linking every region of India. By establishing Mizoram’s inaugural railway line, he is empowering the local populace and boosting the economy,” he remarked.

Once seen as a remote area, the northeastern region is now being interconnected through ambitious railway developments—indicating not merely connectivity but a transformative era of trade, mobility, and integration for India’s northeastern frontier, as declared by the government.

Among these developments is Mizoram’s 51 km Bairabi-Sairang railway line, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a historic moment as it finally places Aizawl on India’s railway map. “Previously reliant on a few isolated stations, the region now stands on the verge of a railway renaissance.

Since 2014, the railway budget for the region has increased fivefold, reaching Rs 62,477 crore.

For the current fiscal year, Rs 10,440 crore has been allocated. With projects estimated at Rs 77,000 crore underway, the region is experiencing an unprecedented surge in rail investments,” stated the government.

In Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur, and beyond, long-stalled projects are finally linking state capitals to the national grid.

In Tripura, the railway line has reached the borders; Meghalaya has inaugurated its first railway station, while Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Assam continue to advance with new lines, electrification, and expansion projects.

Each state’s progress illustrates how railways are evolving the Northeast.

The 51-km Bairabi-Sairang line, constructed at a cost exceeding Rs 8,070 crore, has finally ushered Aizawl into the railway system.

The state also saw the initiation of three new train services: the Sairang-Delhi Rajdhani Express, the Sairang-Guwahati Express, and the Sairang-Kolkata Express.
