PM Modi Celebrates Record Solar Energy Growth in India
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 10 (NationPress) On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India's remarkable achievement in achieving its highest annual solar capacity addition to date.
In a message shared on X, the Prime Minister celebrated this crucial milestone in the renewable energy arena, as highlighted by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, in a recent article.
According to Joshi, India successfully recorded an annual solar capacity addition of approximately 45 GW in 2025-26, nearly doubling the pace of the previous year, thereby solidifying its status as one of the globe's fastest-growing clean energy markets.
This achievement showcases the nation’s unwavering commitment to energy security, sustainable development, and the vision of Viksit Bharat. The significant progress was primarily driven by extensive deployments in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, which collectively accelerated the country's shift toward a cleaner electricity infrastructure.
A standout operational achievement was the installation of 6.65 GW of solar capacity in March 2026, marking the highest addition in a single month and demonstrating enhanced execution capabilities across both utility-scale and distributed solar sectors.
This milestone also indicates improved ecosystem readiness regarding domestic manufacturing, grid integration, and policy support. With India surpassing 150 GW of installed solar capacity, this record addition bolsters the nation’s long-term renewable pipeline and aligns with industrial decarbonization objectives.
The ongoing rise in state-led deployments is poised to stimulate investment in transmission corridors, battery storage, green hydrogen, and solar equipment manufacturing, creating export prospects for modules, inverters, and balance-of-system components.
The Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI) also presented a dividend cheque of Rs 115 crore ($124.08 million) to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, reflecting positive sectoral financial performance and public-sector confidence in the expansion of renewable infrastructure.
Joshi noted that India ranks third globally in Renewable Energy Installed Capacity, according to the Renewable Energy Statistics 2026, having surpassed Brazil in the rankings. These statistics were released by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IREA) as of December 2025.
Additionally, the minister pointed out that in July 2025, India achieved its highest-ever percentage of renewable energy in electricity generation, meeting 51.5 percent of the country's total electricity demand of 203 GW. As of March 31, 2026, a total of 283.46 GW of capacity from non-fossil fuel sources has been operational across the country.
