New Delhi, June 3 (NationPress) Mumbai now holds the impressive position of sixth globally in terms of data centre construction capacity, outpacing renowned hubs like London and Dublin, according to a report released on Tuesday. This achievement signifies the city’s rapid ascent as a pivotal data centre hub.
Mumbai is making substantial contributions to the capacity growth in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.
A report by Cushman & Wakefield indicates that Mumbai is recognized as the seventh most developed data centre market within the APAC region.
By the end of 2024, the city is projected to have 335 MW of data centre capacity under construction, which will enhance its operational capability by 62 percent upon completion.
“The landscape of data centres in India is experiencing a strategic transformation. Mumbai has solidified its position among the top global markets, while Pune is also emerging as a crucial data centre hub within the APAC region. The data centre sector in India has attracted notable international operators and investors, while local entities continue to expand their capacity,” stated Gautam Saraf, Executive Managing Director–Mumbai and New Business, India, Cushman & Wakefield.
This dual momentum of global confidence and local investment emphasizes the country's preparedness for sustainable scaling.
“In the coming years, India is expected to add over 2.7 GW of capacity across under-construction and planned projects, reinforcing its status as a future-ready digital infrastructure powerhouse,” he elaborated.
The report, which analyzes 97 global markets, pointed out that power accessibility, land availability, and infrastructure are critical determinants in the development of data centres.
In Mumbai, the growth of data centres is further bolstered by enhancements in digital infrastructure. This year is anticipated to see the completion of three vital undersea data cable projects landing in Mumbai.
These developments are expected to significantly boost India’s internet capacity and speed, improving inter-regional digital connectivity with Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. The completion of these projects will further solidify Mumbai’s role as a major connectivity hub in the Southeast Asian region, according to the report.
Pune, ranked 4th among APAC’s emerging data centre markets, is swiftly becoming a favored location for hyperscalers and enterprise-grade colocation facilities.
As of Q1 2025, Pune’s operational data centre stock is at 112 IT MW. With an additional 190 IT MW of capacity currently under construction or in planning stages across key areas like Hinjewadi and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the city is set for rapid growth, the report indicates.
