New Delhi, Nov 5 (NationPress) The government has officially introduced the India AI Governance Guidelines as part of the IndiaAI Mission. This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive framework for the safe, inclusive, and responsible integration of advanced technology across various sectors.
According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), this launch is a significant milestone in advance of the India–AI Impact Summit 2026, solidifying India's role in leading responsible AI governance.
The guidelines present seven ethical principles and offer recommendations across six governance pillars. They include an action plan with timelines categorized into short-, medium-, and long-term goals, along with practical advice for industry stakeholders, developers, and regulators to ensure transparency and accountability in AI implementation.
S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, noted that the framework prioritizes human-centric approaches and the application of existing legislation wherever feasible.
Ajay Kumar Sood, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the government, stressed that the fundamental tenet of India's AI strategy is to “Do No Harm”. He further indicated that the framework will integrate innovation sandboxes and risk mitigation strategies within a dynamic regulatory framework.
“The IndiaAI Mission will foster this ecosystem and motivate numerous nations, particularly within the Global South,” Sood remarked.
MeitY's Additional Secretary, Abhishek Singh, added that the draft was shaped through extensive public consultation and rigorous review.
“The government is committed to making AI accessible, affordable, and inclusive while fostering a secure, trustworthy, and responsible environment that promotes innovation and bolsters the AI economy,” he stated.
During the event, winners of the IndiaAI Hackathon for Mineral Targeting were also announced.
IndiaAI, under MeitY, acts as the implementation agency for the IndiaAI Mission, which aims to democratize AI advantages, elevate India's standing in the sector, advocate for technological self-reliance, and ensure ethical and responsible AI practices.
