Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 18 (NationPress) The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) announced on Saturday the formation of a new Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC). This committee is designed to provide expert technical and policy insights for the evolving artificial intelligence governance framework in India.
Serving as an advisory entity to the AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG), the TPEC will assist in shaping policy designs, regulatory actions, and India’s involvement in international AI governance discussions.
Chaired by the Secretary of MeitY, the TPEC includes specialists from various fields, such as academia, the technology sector, and digital policy.
The committee's role is to deliver a comprehensive understanding of technological advancements, regulatory strategies, and global best practices while keeping in mind India's socio-economic and strategic goals, as stated by the government.
The TPEC's responsibilities encompass offering expert guidance to ensure the AIGEG operates effectively, as well as providing updates on key national issues concerning AI policy and governance.
Additionally, the committee will analyze emerging AI technologies, pinpoint potential risks and regulatory deficiencies, and monitor global trends in AI policy and governance. It will also play a crucial role in influencing India’s diplomatic efforts in international discussions about AI governance.
Furthermore, the newly formed AI governance framework designates the AIGEG with the task of defining strategic directions and coordinating policies across the government, while the TPEC will provide expert advice by simplifying complex technical and policy matters into practical recommendations.
The government aims for this framework to foster a dynamic and forward-thinking approach to AI governance, promoting better alignment among strategic, technical, and regulatory decision-making.
Earlier, the government revealed that Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL), a state-owned entity, has entered into a partnership with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC). This collaboration aims to enhance efforts in advanced technologies, digital transformation, and capacity building.
Post-collaboration, the focus will be on executing joint projects, providing consultancy and technical support, and developing innovative solutions in cutting-edge technologies, including AI, machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), cybersecurity, 5G, and cloud computing.
