November Sees Drop in Home-cooked Veg Thali Prices, Non-Veg Thali Remains Unchanged

New Delhi, Dec 5 (NationPress) The price of home-cooked veg thali fell by 2 percent in November compared to the previous month, while the cost of non-veg thali held steady, primarily due to a 17 percent drop in tomato prices during the same period, based on a report issued on Thursday.

The decrease in tomato prices resulted from fresh deliveries from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat in October; however, diminished arrivals in November limited any additional price drop, according to the monthly report from CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analytics.

Simultaneously, the prices of vegetable oil, potatoes, and onions experienced increases of 4 percent, 4 percent, and 1 percent respectively, which hindered a further decline in the overall thali cost.

According to Pushan Sharma, the Director-Research at CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analytics, "The rise in potato and onion prices was due to lower supply levels, with potato arrivals dropping 27 percent and onion arrivals decreasing 28 percent month-on-month, which prevented any additional decline in the veg thali prices."

Sharma further stated, "We anticipate that the prices of vegetables and pulses will stabilize starting in December as new supplies become available, offering some relief to the cost of veg thali."

On a year-on-year basis, the cost of home-cooked veg thali increased by 7 percent in November due to high prices of tomatoes and potatoes, while the non-veg thali cost rose by 2 percent.

A notable 11 percent reduction in fuel prices—from Rs 903 for a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder in Delhi last year to Rs 803 currently—helped to prevent any further increase in thali costs.

For the non-veg thali, a projected 2 percent increase in broiler prices contributed to maintaining a stable thali cost.

Additionally, a year-on-year decrease of 3 percent in broiler prices, which constitute 50 percent of the non-veg thali cost, helped to mitigate further increases.

Sharma concluded, "We expect the upcoming months to show year-on-year growth in the non-veg thali prices due to a low base effect starting from December 2023."
