Seoul, Jan 11 (NationPress) The science ministry of South Korea announced on Sunday that it has engaged in discussions with Nvidia Corp. regarding the rapid establishment of a research facility in the nation.
On Friday (U.S. time), Second Vice Science Minister Ryu Je-myung held a meeting with Jay Puri, who is the executive vice president at Nvidia, in California, as reported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and conveyed by the Yonhap news agency.
Both Ryu and Puri reached a mutual understanding on the urgency of setting up Nvidia's research and development center in South Korea and explored strategies for collaboratively promoting artificial intelligence startups, as stated by the ministry.
In related news, South Korean technology leader Naver revealed the creation of the country’s largest artificial intelligence (AI) computing cluster, which is powered by the next-generation Nvidia B200 Blackwell graphics processing units (GPUs).
The B200 4K Cluster offers Naver global computing capabilities and will aid in the development of its proprietary foundation models and the widespread use of AI technologies, according to a press release from the company.
CEO Choi Soo-yeon remarked, "This AI infrastructure represents a significant advancement in enhancing national AI competitiveness and self-sufficiency."
She further explained, "Naver intends to utilize this infrastructure for rapid training and iterative experimentation, allowing for a more adaptable application of AI technologies across services and industrial environments, thereby generating substantial value."
The cluster is engineered for extensive parallel processing and high-speed communications, achieving performance levels comparable to the world’s top 500 supercomputers, as noted in the release.
Naver anticipates that this infrastructure will accelerate AI model development by approximately 12 times and has plans to expand training for omni models that can handle text, images, video, and audio simultaneously, as reported.
