Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 1 (NationPress) The Fact Check Unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has successfully released 2,913 fact checks on its official social media channels, aimed at debunking various false claims related to the Union government. These include deepfakes, AI-generated misinformation, and misleading videos, notifications, letters, and websites, as stated in an official announcement on Wednesday.
Minister of State (MoS) for Information and Broadcasting, L. Murugan, highlighted in the Lok Sabha that Operation Sindoor saw the PIB Fact Check Unit actively confronting misinformation and negative narratives that were proliferating online. The unit took immediate steps to validate false claims, disseminating verified information and ensuring that the public received accurate communications, thereby aiding in the reduction of misleading and anti-India narratives.
As part of this initiative, the Ministry also directed the blocking of over 1,400 URLs on digital platforms during Operation Sindoor.
All verified fact checks are accessible through PIB Fact Check's official social media platforms, which include X, Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, Threads, and WhatsApp Channel, according to the MoS for Information and Broadcasting.
The Fact Check Unit's primary role is to identify fake news and misinformation pertaining to the Central government.
After confirming the authenticity of news through authorized sources, the Fact Check Unit shares accurate information across its social media channels.
Furthermore, the unit encourages the public to report questionable content for verification, thus promoting community involvement in the fight against misinformation.
For digital media and online curated content publishers, the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (IT Rules, 2021) have established a Code of Ethics.
It also outlines a three-tier institutional framework for addressing grievances related to breaches of the Code of Ethics by such publishers.
Recently, PIB flagged a misleading message circulating on social media, which falsely claimed that users of the State Bank of India's YONO app would have their accounts blocked unless they promptly updated their Aadhaar details.
