How is Ruby Bhatnagar Empowering Over 3,000 Women in Uttarakhand Under PMEGP?

Haldwani, Sep 8 (NationPress) Ruby Bhatnagar, a resident of Haldwani in Uttarakhand, is not only a prosperous entrepreneur but also a remarkable beacon of hope in the realm of Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India).

She has developed a flourishing model of self-employment, deeply rooted in India’s vibrant heritage of handlooms and handicrafts, receiving valuable assistance through the Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP).

With an initial loan of Rs 10 lakhs from the PMEGP scheme, she aimed to foster self-reliance among aspiring entrepreneurs. This financial backing enabled Ruby to launch a cottage industry specializing in handcrafted products, including jute bags, designer clothing, toys, home decor, and various handicrafts. Her initiative signifies more than just a business; it represents a revival and modernization of Swadeshi (indigenous) handloom products, making them pertinent in today’s marketplace.

To enhance her skills and leadership abilities, Ruby engaged in multiple Self-Help Group (SHG) training programs, where she acquired new handicraft techniques and effective practices for managing group ventures. These experiences empowered her to broaden her vision beyond personal achievements.

She progressively established a robust network of women artisans. Currently, Ruby’s operations have expanded to three districts in Uttarakhand—Nainital, Udham Singh Nagar, and Champawat. She has created employment opportunities for over 3,000 women, as Bhatnagar informed IANS. These women are now integral members of a growing network of self-sufficient artisans contributing to their families and the local economy.

Ruby believes that initiatives like PMEGP serve as lifelines for women striving to overcome economic dependency.

“Every woman should leverage the Prime Minister’s self-employment schemes. They offer more than just financial aid—they are pathways to confidence, independence, and empowerment,” she expressed in a conversation with IANS.

Through her dedication to self-reliance and community empowerment, Ruby Bhatnagar embodies how government initiatives, coupled with skill, determination, and purpose, can alter lives. She continues to motivate thousands to aspire for greater achievements and build resilient, self-sufficient communities—one handcrafted product at a time.

Hema Bisht is among the numerous women whose lives have positively transformed after joining Ruby Bhatnagar’s women empowerment project. After undergoing hands-on training in handicrafts, Hema became an active participant in Ruby’s self-help group.

She commenced work in the jute production unit, where she perfected her skills in crafting various eco-friendly products such as jute bags and intricately crafted jute jewelry.

With this opportunity, Hema not only acquired new skills but also secured a reliable income stream, enabling her to support her family and achieve financial independence.

Another inspiring narrative arises from Kiran, a co-worker at the unit. Kiran recounted that prior to joining the group, she had no employment and limited means to assist her household.

However, joining Ruby Bhatnagar’s initiative instilled in her a renewed sense of purpose.

“I had no job before and no way to earn, but after becoming part of this group, I’ve gained so much knowledge and now I can earn for myself. It’s a significant step towards becoming self-reliant,” she shared with appreciation.
