S. Korea and Qatar push AI, semiconductor, biohealth cooperation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Trade ministers of South Korea and Qatar agreed on Wednesday, 29 April to deepen bilateral cooperation across advanced industries — including artificial intelligence (AI) transformation of the manufacturing sector, semiconductors, and biohealth — according to Seoul's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.
What the Ministers Agreed
Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo met with his Qatari counterpart, Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Sayed, in Seoul to discuss expanding economic and investment ties between the two nations, the ministry said, citing Yonhap News Agency. The two ministers agreed to leverage South Korea's manufacturing capabilities alongside Qatar's capital strength and commitment to industrial diversification.
A key focus of the talks was South Korea's Manufacturing AI Transformation (M.AX) initiative, which aims to integrate AI and robotics across industrial production lines. Both sides discussed potential collaboration frameworks under the M.AX banner, the ministry noted.
Biohealth and AI Chips on the Agenda
Minister Yeo highlighted the ongoing expansion of Korean biopharmaceutical firms into Qatar and pointed to the potential of South Korea's local AI chip fabless companies as areas ripe for investment collaboration. He called on Qatar to consider targeted investment in both segments, according to the ministry.
Yeo also commended Qatar's resilience amid the continuing conflict in the Middle East, reaffirming Seoul's commitment to energy cooperation with Doha.
