Seoul, Aug 8 (NationPress) The government has initiated a task force (TF) dedicated to the development of a next-generation power grid that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the efficiency of power supply, as announced by the industry ministry on Friday.
This task force was established following President Lee Jae Myung's call last week for initiatives to create a smart power grid that integrates the entirety of the nation with optimized power generation, storage, and consumption, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
The TF includes relevant government departments such as finance, industry, science, and land ministries, along with public entities like the Korea Electric Power Corp. and the Korea Power Exchange.
The proposed next-gen power grid will utilize AI technology to efficiently supply renewable energy without the need for extensive new infrastructure, addressing the rising demand for electricity driven by technological advancements, the ministry elaborated.
Additionally, it aims to promote optimal power usage and bolster the nation's energy security, the ministry highlighted.
"We are currently in a period where electricity is crucial for survival, and to deliver affordable and clean energy reliably, the development of a next-gen power grid using AI is essential," stated Second Vice Industry Minister Lee Ho-hyeon, who leads the new task force.
"By establishing compact, localized power grids and interlinking them, we will transform our national power grid," he further noted.
The vice minister also mentioned that the government intends to encourage new business models in the energy sector, such as virtual power plants, to support the sustainable growth of the energy industry and invigorate local economies.
Meanwhile, President Lee Jae Myung has emphasized the need for a next-generation power grid, highlighting the significance of transitioning the country's power supply infrastructure towards one that focuses on renewable energy.
"The transition to cleaner energy has become a critical goal," Lee remarked during a meeting with senior presidential advisors. "With the AI revolution underway, enhancing the supply of renewable energy via improvements to the power grid is very urgent."
Lee directed the government to formulate strategies for establishing a next-generation power grid that reduces the inefficiencies associated with long-distance power transmission while incorporating cutting-edge AI technology.
The presidential office indicated that the government plans to develop South Jeolla Province into a central hub for this initiative, recognizing the region's potential for renewable energy production.
