Will the Sensex and Nifty Stay Closed on January 15 for Maharashtra Civic Polls?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Jan 12 (NationPress) The Indian stock exchanges will not be operational on January 15 due to the upcoming municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra, as announced by both the BSE and NSE on Monday.
The BSE issued a statement confirming that trading will be halted in the equity segment, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives, and electronic gold receipts for that day.
Furthermore, it noted that equity derivative contracts that were initially set to expire on January 15, 2026, will now have their expiry moved to January 14.
These changes will be updated in the end-of-day contract master files.
In a similar vein, the NSE has updated its earlier notice to affirm that January 15 will be recognized as a trading holiday across both the capital market and the futures and options sectors.
This decision aligns with the Maharashtra government’s declaration of a public holiday on January 15, as per the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, to facilitate the smooth execution of elections in 29 municipal corporations, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in Mumbai.
The state government utilized its powers under Section 25 of the Act, with the approval of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Voting for the BMC and the other 28 municipal corporations is scheduled for January 15, with vote counting to follow on January 16.
Given that most banks will be closed for the public holiday, trading and settlement operations in the stock market will also be paused for the day.
Initially, both exchanges had indicated that January 15 would only be a settlement holiday; however, this has now been revised to a complete trading holiday. Settlement holidays are generally declared during elections or significant public events that impact banking and clearing activities.
With this latest update, Indian stock exchanges will observe 16 holidays in 2026, with January 26 marking the second market holiday of the month.
Other notable holidays in the first half of the year include Holi on March 3, Ram Navami on March 26, Mahavir Jayanti on March 31, Good Friday on April 3, Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, Maharashtra Day on May 1, and Bakri Id on May 28.
