Sensex drops 876 points, Nifty slides below 22,900 on bank and IT selloff
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Benchmark equity indices on Monday, 19 October suffered their steepest single-session decline in weeks as heavy selling in banking and information technology stocks hammered investor confidence in Mumbai. The BSE Sensex plunged 876.37 points, or 1.17 per cent, to close at 73,852.90, while the Nifty50 snapped a two-day winning streak, shedding 257.20 points, or 1.11 per cent, to settle at 22,888.95.
What Triggered the Selloff
Technical analysts noted that the Nifty formed a long bearish candlestick pattern after selling pressure emerged near the 38.2 per cent Fibonacci retracement level at 23,186 — a level measured from the 3 August high to the 8 October low. The index then broke below the psychologically significant 23,000 support mark, signalling continued near-term weakness. Market participants reportedly remained cautious as gains from the previous two sessions were erased in a single day.
Key Technical Levels to Watch
Analysts warned that immediate support is placed at the 22,800–22,820 range, near the daily 20-day Simple Moving Average (SMA). “A break below 22,650–22,700 could further intensify selling pressure,” analysts stated. They added: “Index traders should remain cautious, keeping 22,800 as key support and 23,000–23,186 as resistance. Long positions built during the mean-reversion rally should be reviewed, with a break below 22,600 levels.”
Broader Market and Sectoral Impact
Weakness was not confined to large caps. The Nifty Midcap 100 fell 1.09 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap 100 declined 1.01 per cent, underscoring the broad-based nature of the selloff. Sectorally, the Nifty Private Bank index was the day's worst performer, while IT stocks also witnessed significant declines, compounding pressure on the headline indices.
Top Gainers and Losers Among Sensex Stocks
SBI and Adani Ports bucked the broader trend, each rising more than 1 per cent to emerge as top gainers. L&T, IndiGo, and Maruti Suzuki also ended in positive territory. On the losing side, Axis Bank led the decline, followed by UltraTech Cement, Infosys, Bajaj Finance, and Trent, as investors booked profits across heavyweight counters.
What Markets Watch Next
With the Nifty now trading below the crucial 23,000 level, all eyes will be on whether the index can defend the 22,800 support zone in the sessions ahead. A sustained breach of that floor could open the door to steeper corrections, according to analysts. Upcoming domestic and global macro data, along with any developments in foreign institutional investor flows, are expected to set the near-term direction.
