New Delhi, June 25 (NationPress) The journey of Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station marks a significant milestone for Gaganyaan, India’s forthcoming human spaceflight initiative, launched on Wednesday.
After a gap of 41 years, India is again sending an astronaut into space, making Shukla the second Indian to achieve this feat, following Rakesh Sharma's historic flight in 1984.
Shukla’s launch took place at 2:31 a.m. EDT (12 noon IST) from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, aboard a new SpaceX Dragon spacecraft utilizing the Falcon 9 rocket.
“Shubhanshu Shukla’s mission to the space station is vital for India, as we have been diligently preparing for the Gaganyaan mission for quite some time. Four astronauts have completed advanced training in Russia and Bengaluru. Shukla’s experiments in space will provide invaluable insights for Gaganyaan,” stated R.C. Kapoor, a scientist at the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and space expert, in an interview with IANS.
“We feel proud and excited to witness Shubhanshu Shukla becoming the second Indian to venture into space as part of the Axiom-4 Mission. This journey signifies India’s expanding global presence in space exploration and serves as a stepping-stone toward our aspirations with Gaganyaan, our indigenous human spaceflight program,” remarked Lt. Gen. AK Bhatt (retd.), Director General of the Indian Space Association (ISpA).
The expert noted that the Gaganyaan mission is currently in its final preparation stages, with a planned launch in 2027.
“Congratulations to Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian Astronaut set to embark on a mission to the International Space Station. This is indeed a proud moment for India! ISRO’s expanding global collaborations, following reforms by the government under PM Narendra Modi, have positioned India at the forefront of space exploration,” commented Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, in a post on X.
Shukla is serving as the pilot for the mission, alongside Commander Peggy Whitson from the US.
The crew also includes Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary, both designated as mission specialists.
“A historic moment! Wishing Group Captain #ShubhanshuShukla great success on his mission to the International Space Station. 140 crore dreams soar with you into space! Best wishes to you and your crew!” added Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in a post on X.
IAF Group Captain Shukla emphasized that this space mission represents the journey of India's human spaceflight.
“This is not just my journey; I carry the Indian flag with me. This symbolizes the journey of India's human spaceflight,” stated Shukla while onboard the flight.
“India is returning to space, Jai Hind,” he tweeted just before the launch.
“After 41 years, India’s flag will once again fly in space,” he added.
Shukla will conduct approximately two weeks of scientific research aboard the ISS, focusing on food and space nutrition, along with studying the impacts of microgravity and space radiation on edible microalgae—a nutrient-dense food source for future space missions.
