New Delhi, July 3 (NationPress) The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) is presently assessing the approval process for Elon Musk’s cost-effective satellite internet service, Starlink, which is expected to launch in India within a few months.
Reliable sources informed IANS on Thursday that “the authorisation is still under evaluation” at the space regulator’s end for Starlink services in India.
However, IN-SPACe did not provide immediate comments regarding the progress of the authorisation process or whether it has advanced significantly.
IN-SPACe Chairman Dr. Pawan Goenka recently met with Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, to address unresolved issues related to the authorisation.
While the foundational work is nearly finished, additional technical and procedural actions are necessary before the service can launch in a few months, according to sources.
On Wednesday, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia told IANS that all necessary due diligence has been finalized for the entry of SpaceX’s Starlink service in India. Once they obtain the appropriate regulatory and licensing approvals from the space authority, they can initiate the service rollout in the country at their discretion.
“The ball is now in Starlink’s court to commence operations in India once those approvals are secured,” Scindia remarked.
Dr. Goenka recently confirmed in reports that the majority of regulatory and licensing requirements for Starlink have been met.
The space regulator has already issued a draft letter of intent (LOI) to the company. Upon signing this document by both parties, Starlink will be officially authorized to launch its services in the Indian market. Starlink delivers internet connectivity through a network of satellites orbiting Earth, boasting the world’s largest constellation of over 6,750 satellites.
Currently, Starlink services are available across various countries, including Mongolia, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Jordan, Yemen, Azerbaijan, and Sri Lanka.
