New Delhi, May 8 (NationPress) Tech billionaire Elon Musk's affordable internet service Starlink is moving closer to its launch in India, having received a Letter of Intent (LoI) from the Department of Telecom (DoT).
The initial approval followed Starlink's commitment to adhere to the new national security directives for satellite communication operators.
The Department has outlined 29 additional requirements, including the necessity for interception and monitoring systems, utilization of local data centers, tracking of mobile user terminals, and localization mandates, for both existing and prospective satellite communication licensees.
Next, Starlink must secure approval from the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) and has already submitted the required documentation prior to the allocation of spectrum for its satellite internet service, as per reports.
Last month, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with senior executives from Starlink to discuss the company’s investment intentions in India.
"Met a delegation from Starlink, including Vice President Chad Gibbs & Senior Director Ryan Goodnight. Our discussions revolved around Starlink's innovative technology platform, current partnerships, and future investment plans in India," Goyal shared on X after the meeting.
This meeting coincided with domestic telecom giants such as Airtel engaging with the US firm regarding the potential introduction of satellite communication services in India. Vodafone Idea also mentioned that it is in discussions with Starlink to deliver satellite communication services in the country.
Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has emphasized the necessity for satellite internet, particularly in rural regions of India.

SpaceX is recognized as the first private entity to transport astronauts to and from the International Space Station and has successfully completed an all-civilian crew mission in orbit.
