Tamil Nadu Toll Rates Increase: Impact on Transport Costs Looms
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 1 (NationPress) Motorists in Tamil Nadu will face increased toll charges as new rates took effect on Wednesday at 68 toll plazas located along national and state highways.
The hike, which ranges from three to five percent, is part of the annual toll adjustment process and is anticipated to have a ripple effect on transportation costs and possibly lead to higher prices for essential goods.
Official statistics reveal that this latest increase impacts 60 toll plazas on National Highways and eight on state highways.
The toll increase varies from Rs 5 to Rs 40 based on the type of vehicle and specific toll location.
Officials have stated that the remaining 17 toll plazas in the state are scheduled for a similar adjustment beginning September 1.
Prominent toll plazas in the Chennai region, including Paranur in Chengalpattu district, as well as Vanagaram, Athur, Surapattu, Nallur, and Sriperumbudur, are included in the revised toll rates, all of which experience heavy daily traffic due to their location near industrial areas and suburban neighborhoods.
Other significant locations affected by the toll increase include Kappalur, Samayapuram, and Nanguneri.
At the Paranur toll plaza, frequently used by commuters on the GST Road corridor, there has been a slight rise in charges across most vehicle categories.
While the toll for passenger cars remains steady at Rs 75, fees for light motor vehicles have increased from Rs 115 to Rs 120.
Likewise, buses and trucks will now incur a charge of Rs 250, up from Rs 245.
The revised rates also extend to heavy vehicles.
Charges for three-axle vehicles have risen from Rs 270 to Rs 275.
Vehicles with over five axles will now be charged Rs 395, an increase from the previous Rs 385, while those with more than seven axles will pay Rs 480, up from Rs 470.
Highway department officials indicated that these changes are part of a routine annual adjustment mechanism that is linked to inflation and maintenance expenses.
However, transport operators have raised concerns that even minor increases could cumulatively escalate logistics costs, which may ultimately be transferred to consumers.
As freight transportation is a vital component of the state's economy, the recent toll revisions are likely to be scrutinized for their broader economic implications in the months ahead.
