Women Filing Income Tax Returns in India Increases by 25.3% Over Four Years

New Delhi, Dec 1 (NationPress) The overall number of women submitting income tax returns in India has experienced a remarkable 25.3% increase in the past four years, jumping from 1.83 crore in assessment year (AY) 2019-20 to more than 2.29 crore in AY 2023-24, as per statistics gathered by the Income Tax Department.
This surge indicates a growing trend of women engaging in well-paying employment or establishing their own business initiatives, as noted by a senior official.
In AY 2023-24, the cumulative total of income tax returns (ITRs), which encompass both individual and corporate filings, exceeded 7.97 crore.
The data reveals that Maharashtra led with the highest number of women ITRs, totaling 36,83,457 in AY24, marking a 23% increase. Gujarat followed in second place with 22,50,098 women filing ITRs, showing a growth of 24.4%, while Uttar Pradesh secured the third position with 20,43,794 ITRs, reflecting a robust growth of 29.2% during this timeframe.
Similar upward trends have been observed in other prominent states. In Tamil Nadu, the number of women ITR filers rose by over 20%, increasing from 12,92,028 in AY20 to 15,51,769. Meanwhile, Karnataka saw an increase of 20% from 11,34,903 to 14,30,345 over the four-year duration. Punjab recorded a significant 36.23% rise from 9,70,801 in AY20 to 13,22,580 in AY24, while Rajasthan observed an increase of 25.49%, reaching 13,52,202.
Smaller states and Union Territories, such as Jammu & Kashmir and Mizoram, also noted a substantial growth in women filing income tax returns from 2019-20 to 2023-24. Mizoram experienced a remarkable 96% increase in the number of women filers, totaling 2,090, while J&K reported a 49.2% growth, reaching 1,17,514.
