New Delhi, May 9 (NationPress) The social media platform X, led by billionaire Elon Musk, announced on Thursday that it has been instructed by the Indian government to block more than 8,000 accounts within the country due to violations of local laws, and it intends to adhere to these legal requirements.
Although the platform did not disclose the specific names of the accounts, it confirmed that the list includes international news organizations and notable X users, according to a statement released by the media platform.
This action occurs amidst the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict, following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists, which has led to a surge in misinformation.
X stated, "We have received executive orders from the Indian government that mandate X to block over 8,000 accounts in India, with potential penalties that include hefty fines and even imprisonment for the company’s local employees."
The statement emphasized that the government did not clarify which specific posts were deemed to have violated laws.
"In many cases, we did not receive any evidence or rationale for blocking the accounts," X remarked, indicating that it will comply with the order while only withholding the accounts in India.
Labeling the decision as "not easy," X mentioned that it has begun the process and has sent notifications to the affected users regarding the actions taken.
The company also expressed its dissent regarding the Indian government’s demands for blocking entire accounts.
"This constitutes censorship of both current and future content and contradicts the fundamental right to free speech," the statement added.
X highlighted that the platform plays a crucial role in enabling Indians to access information.
"We believe it is vital for these executive orders to be public for transparency's sake – a lack of disclosure undermines accountability and can lead to arbitrary decision-making. However, due to legal limitations, we are currently unable to publish these executive orders," the statement noted.
The Musk-led company stated that it is exploring all available legal options.
It also urged affected users to seek suitable legal recourse through the courts.
