Adah Sharma on crafting morally complex roles: 'A solid character is fun to play'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Actress Adah Sharma, preparing for her upcoming film 'Governor: The Silent Saviour' alongside Manoj Bajpayee, has opened up about the creative thrill of balancing layered narratives with powerfully drawn individual characters. Speaking to IANS, the 33-year-old revealed how roles spanning bold, flawed, and morally ambiguous personalities across projects like 'Sunflower', '1920', and 'The Kerala Story' continue to fuel her as an actor.
The appeal of complex characters
When asked whether complex narratives or strong individual characters excite her more at this stage of her career, Adah responded: "A little bit of both, I guess." She elaborated on the challenge of portraying Rosie in 'Sunflower', a character delivering bold and provocative dialogue. "She was saying such bold and almost sleazy dialogues. It made me almost nervous, wondering how I would pull it off," Adah shared.
From possession to moral ambiguity
Reflecting on her role as Liza in '1920', Adah highlighted the intersection of complex narrative and character depth. "I have never been possessed in real life, so that was a complex narrative and strong character," she explained. Similarly, her portrayal of Shalini in 'The Kerala Story' required audiences to empathise with a protagonist making poor decisions. "Shalini was doing some really silly things, making bad decisions, and still, we had to convince the audience to be on her side and not hate her, so that was also exciting," Adah noted.
Governor: The Silent Saviour takes shape
'Governor: The Silent Saviour', slated for release on 12 June, is reportedly inspired by S. Venkitaramanan, who served as RBI Governor during India's 1991 economic crisis and was instrumental in the country's financial rescue efforts. The makers have not yet officially confirmed this attribution. The film carries a strong "national crisis" theme, marking another departure into substantive storytelling for Adah.
Production and creative team
The film is presented by Sunshine Pictures, produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, and directed by Chinmay Mandlekar. It is co-produced by Aashin A. Shah and written by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani, and Vipul Amrutlal Shah.
From debut to stardom
Adah entered cinema in 2008 with the horror film '1920', followed by roles in 'Hasee Toh Phasee', 'Commando', 'Heart Attack', 'S/O Satyamurthy', and 'Kshanam'. Her breakthrough came with the 2023 release 'The Kerala Story', which catapulted her to widespread recognition and demonstrated her range across genres and character types.
