The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has formally urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct an independent, impartial, and transparent probe into the death of Kumkum Bhagya actress Sanchita Ugale, who reportedly died by suicide on 14 June 2025 at her residence in Nalasopara East, Mumbai.

The AICWA Letter

Suresh Shyamlal Gupta, President of AICWA, penned the letter to the Chief Minister, stating that the circumstances surrounding Ugale's death raise serious concerns that demand a thorough inquiry. 'Over the years, the Indian entertainment industry has witnessed several deaths and alleged suicide cases that have raised public concern. Every life is precious, and every family deserves clarity, accountability, and justice,' Gupta wrote. He added that such an inquiry is 'essential to establish the truth, ensure justice for Sanchita Ugale and her family, and strengthen public confidence in the investigative process.'

Gupta also pointed to the actress's social media activity in the hours before her death, calling it a critical element of the timeline that investigators must examine. 'Approximately 19 hours before news of her death emerged, Sanchita Ugale had shared a video on her Instagram Story featuring the song Dapli Wale Dapli Baja. This publicly visible activity forms an important part of the timeline and should be examined as part of a comprehensive investigation,' he noted, adding that the apparent contrast between her online activity and the events that followed has raised questions among many people.

Key Questions AICWA Has Raised

The association has flagged several unanswered questions, including what circumstances led a 22-year-old artist with an active career and future aspirations to take such an extreme step, and whether any external pressures or influencing factors were involved. 'AICWA firmly believes that this case must be investigated from every possible angle. No aspect should be overlooked, and no assumption should be made without evidence,' Gupta stated.

The body further argued that a thorough investigation would reinforce public trust and ensure that such cases within the entertainment industry are treated with the seriousness they deserve.

What Happened on 14 June

According to police reports, Sanchita Ugale, aged 22, was found dead at her residence in Sai Santoshi Building, Aachole Village, Nalasopara East, between 7:00 pm and 7:30 pm on 14 June. Assistant Police Inspector Vinod Bagh of Achole Police Station stated that Ugale had locked herself inside her bedroom and allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan using a saree. She was known for her role in the popular television serial Kumkum Bhagya.

A Pattern of Concern in the Industry

This is not the first time the Indian film and television industry has been shaken by such an incident. AICWA has noted that recurring cases of suicide within the entertainment sector are 'deeply unfortunate and a matter of serious concern.' The association has called for systemic accountability so that, as Gupta put it, 'no other young artist in the Indian film industry suffers a similar fate in the future.'

Whether the Maharashtra government accepts AICWA's demand for an SIT and how swiftly the probe progresses will be closely watched by the industry and Ugale's family in the days ahead.
