Senegalese-American singer Akon has offered a rare glimpse into the structure of his polygamous family, revealing that communication and an unwavering hierarchy — with his first wife at the top — are what keep the arrangement functioning. The musician made the candid disclosures during an appearance on the We Need To Talk podcast.

The Hierarchy Within the Family

Akon, who has previously acknowledged having nine children, was characteristically guarded about the precise number of wives he currently has. Asked directly, he said: 'I'll just leave that to your imagination.'

He was, however, emphatic about one rule: his first wife holds an inviolable position. 'That one is the reason you even got one, two or three. She's the queen. Nobody violates wife No. 1. The moment they violate, (they're) out the door,' he said. The 53-year-old added that this seniority came with its own burdens, as the first wife must absorb the new attitudes and behaviours that each additional partner brings into the family.

Communication as the Cornerstone

Akon argued that the arrangement works primarily because of open, ongoing communication among all parties involved. 'You got to be mature enough to know if this is the situation that I'm going to park in, I have to communicate. This I like, this I don't like... And once y'all lay down those rules, just abide by them. It's literally that simple,' he said.

He also contended that in a polygamous structure, the burden of responsibility rests squarely with the man, and suggested there were benefits for the women involved — a claim that is likely to draw scrutiny from critics of the lifestyle.

The Divorce Filing and Its Context

The podcast appearance comes amid a significant personal development: Tomeka Thiam, widely believed to be Akon's first wife, reportedly filed for divorce in September 2025 after nearly 29 years of marriage. Akon did not directly address the filing during the interview, and it remains unclear how the reported separation affects the family structure he described.
