Austin Butler Takes on Christian Bale’s Legendary Role in 'American Psycho'

Los Angeles, Dec 12 (NationPress) Hollywood actor Austin Butler is set to take on the role of Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino‘s fresh interpretation of the novel 'American Psycho' by Bret Easton Ellis for Lionsgate. The character was previously portrayed by the Hollywood icon and master of body transformations, Christian Bale, in the original 'American Psycho'.
Despite earlier speculation that Jacob Elordi was in the running to play Patrick Bateman, those casting rumors did not materialize, as reported by 'Variety'.
Interestingly, both Elordi and Butler have portrayed distinct interpretations of Elvis in separate films directed by Sofia Coppola ('Priscilla') and Baz Luhrmann ('Elvis'), respectively.
According to 'Variety', the upcoming film, featuring a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns ('The Laundromat'), will not serve as a remake of the 2000 film but will instead be a new interpretation of Ellis novel. The original film, released in 2000 and set in the 1980s, starred Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street yuppie turned serial killer.
Through the lens of Guadagnino, renowned for works like 'Call Me by Your Name', 'Challengers', and most recently 'Queer', this new adaptation may infuse a greater erotic element compared to the original horror satire. Guadagnino has previously explored genre elements in films such as “Suspiria” and “Bones and All.” While Butler is confirmed to play the lead role, Guadagnino might offer a fresh perspective on the Patrick Bateman character, diverging significantly from its earlier portrayal.
Having recently completed filming for “After the Hunt” featuring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield, Guadagnino has received acclaim for his recent projects, with nominations at the Golden Globes for his last two films, “Queer” and “Challengers.” Notably, Daniel Craig from “Queer” is nominated for best actor, while Zendaya competes for best actress in “Challengers,” which is also nominated for best motion picture (musical or comedy) and music.
