Hollywood actress Penelope Cruz has revealed that her marriage to actor Javier Bardem remains a journey of continuous discovery, even after more than 15 years of being together. Cruz, 52, made the candid admission while promoting her upcoming film 'The Invite', directed by Olivia Wilde.

What Cruz Said About Their Relationship

Speaking to People magazine, Cruz reflected on the evolving nature of long-term partnerships. 'I feel like I'm still learning (in my relationship), you know? And I am with somebody that I've known for 33 years. I really know that person, but it's like, is there a day where you really get to know yourself? No. So the same with your partner,' she said.

Cruz connected her personal experience to the themes of 'The Invite', a comedy centred on the relationship dynamics of two couples at a dinner party. She noted that the film resonates because many people continue discovering new dimensions of their partners regardless of how long they have been together.

How Cruz and Bardem First Met

The couple first crossed paths in 1992 while filming the Spanish dark comedy 'Jamon Jamon'. Despite what Bardem, 57, later described as 'obvious' chemistry, he told GQ that 'nothing happened' between them at the time.

Their romantic connection did not take root until they reunited on the set of the 2008 film 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona'. Bardem recalled that neither was willing to make the first move — attributing it to shyness or professionalism — until a wrap party on the final day of filming changed everything. 'I thought, F*** We better get drunk. Luckily a friend of ours threw a wrap party and, well, the rest is history. Thank God,' he said.

The Foundation of Their Bond

In a 2024 interview with Gentleman's Journal, Bardem credited the durability of their connection to the fact that they knew each other before fame reshaped their public identities. 'We met each other and knew each other before all of the noise, before success and before anybody saw us with different eyes because of who we now were, what we had become,' he said.
