Director Gowtam Tinnanuri has revealed that his upcoming biopic 'MS – A Legacy on Screen', centred on legendary Carnatic vocalist and Bharat Ratna awardee M S Subbulakshmi, will go beyond celebrating her musical genius to explore the deeply personal story of the woman behind the icon. Speaking at the film's official launch event held at the Music Academy in Chennai on Wednesday, 17 September 2026, Tinnanuri said his team had spent an entire year immersed in research before the first frame was conceived.

A Year of Living With One Name

Tinnanuri described how the film's perspective evolved as the team dug deeper into Subbulakshmi's extraordinary life. 'For the last one year, our entire team was constantly living with one name, M.S. Subbulakshmi Amma. When we started our work, we first thought we were working on a picture in which we had to show India's greatest musician ever produced. But after getting into the story, we slowly realised that it was not simply about a great musician. It's about an extraordinary life,' he said at the launch event.

The director emphasised that the Bharat Ratna, the iconic concert halls, and the celebrated performances were only fragments of a far richer story. 'Behind all these, there is a human being, there is a daughter, there is an artiste, there is a woman who dreamed, who saw success, who saw failure, who did a lot of sacrifice. We want to capture that human side of M.S. Amma's life in this film,' he added.

A Message for the Next Generation

Addressing the gathering, which included a significant number of young attendees, Tinnanuri drew a pointed contrast between the instant-fame culture of today and the decades-long discipline that defined Subbulakshmi's rise. 'We live in a very fast-paced world. Fame comes overnight and probably success is measured by the number of likes, shares and subscribers that one gets. On the other hand, when you see M.S. Amma, her greatness was built over a lifetime through sheer discipline and patience. And I think that's a very good and very powerful message what we can take to the next generation,' the director said.

The remark signals that the filmmakers intend the biopic to function not merely as a tribute but as a larger cultural statement — a timely one, given the growing appetite among Indian audiences for prestige biographical cinema.

Actress Rashmika Mandanna is set to portray M S Subbulakshmi — a casting that has already generated widespread discussion. The launch was held to coincide with the legendary singer's 110th birth anniversary. Music duties for the biopic will be handled by composer Anirudh Ravichander, one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Indian film music. The production is backed by Geetha Arts, Rockline Entertainment, and Bunny Vas Works.

Tinnanuri went out of his way to address the weight of expectation from Subbulakshmi's devoted fanbase. 'We truly understand the magnitude of this story.
