Mumbai, May 27 (NationPress) Former actress Geeta Basra has shared insights into her choice to exit the film industry.

In a reflective discussion, Basra delved into the hurdles she encountered as a newcomer in Bollywood, pointing out that a lack of strong support resulted in lost chances, including four significant film roles. In her recent chat with IANS, she discussed the early stages of her career and how the prevailing attitudes at the time affected her opportunities.

After meeting her husband, cricketer Harbhajan Singh, she noted a sudden shift in the industry's perception. Influenced by conventional views, producers and filmmakers assumed she was on the path to marriage, leading them to withdraw from potential collaborations. When asked about her departure from the film scene during a promising career phase, Geeta Basra explained that at the time of meeting Harbhajan, she was just adapting to both the film industry and life in India.

“When I first met Bhajji, I had just embarked on my career. I was a newcomer to India and the industry. Back then, the mindset was quite different—public associations with men were frowned upon. Even the audience, as well as producers, directors, and actors, held traditional views. I lost out on four films because of assumptions about my impending marriage. Lacking a 'godfather' in the industry made it challenging to change those perceptions. Thankfully, times have evolved. Today, marital status or children don't define one's career; it's all about the work you deliver,” Basra stated.

When asked if Harbhajan encouraged her return to films after their marriage, the cricketer remarked that the decision was solely hers. He stressed that he never placed any expectations on her and respected her choice to step back from the spotlight.

Harbhajan commented, “Whenever she faced decisions in her life, I stood by her and supported her. Ultimately, everything unfolds as per God’s plan—when and how much we can accomplish is in His hands. My role is to be her pillar of support and encourage whatever path she chooses. We always wish for her success in any endeavor she pursues.”

Over the years, Geeta Basra has established herself in Bollywood with notable performances in films such as “Dil Diya Hai,” “The Train,” “Zila Ghaziabad,” and “Mr. Joe B. Carvalho.” In 2016, she made an appearance in the Punjabi film “Lock.”
