Veteran Bollywood actress Himani Shivpuri has revisited one of the most formative chapters of her theatrical career — a stage production of Shakespeare's Othello performed in Idar, a small town in Gujarat, in 1983, as part of the National School of Drama (NSD) repertory company. The actress shared the memory alongside an archival photograph on her social media account, sparking a wave of nostalgia among her followers.

The Memory Behind the Post

In the image shared by Shivpuri, she is seen dressed in a pink traditional outfit, gesturing toward an old display board featuring a still from the original stage production. The archival display confirms the production dates back to 1983.

Writing about the experience, Shivpuri recalled: 'Suprabhat! The past and present together. In the NSD repertory company Fritz Bennewitz had come to direct Othello, Namdev played Othello, and I played Desdemona, Dolly Ahluwalia did the costumes. I can never forget the show of Othello in Idar, a small village in Gujarat. I remember being petrified performing Othello in a village, in the green room the noise of the audience, huge crowd... After the play began the audience was sucked into the poetry and beauty of Shakespeare. A truly humbling experience, one of our best shows!'

A Landmark NSD Production

The production was directed by Fritz Bennewitz, who helmed the NSD repertory's adaptation of the Shakespeare classic. Namdev took on the titular role of Othello, while Shivpuri portrayed Desdemona. Costumes for the production were designed by Dolly Ahluwalia, who would go on to become a celebrated name in Indian cinema's costume design space.

Notably, the choice of venue — a village setting rather than a conventional theatre — made the performance all the more remarkable. Shivpuri described the pre-show nerves of performing in an unfamiliar, open environment, only for the audience to be entirely absorbed by the poetry of Shakespeare once the play commenced.
