Mumbai, Sep 29 (NationPress) Renowned filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, whose Netflix biopic “Amar Singh Chamkila” has clinched a nomination at the esteemed International Emmy Awards, shared insights about the most significant compliment he has received regarding the film, which he regards as a remarkable milestone in his career.
During a conversation with IANS, Imtiaz recounted, “At the premiere of the film, I met Mr. Benz, an elderly gentleman who served as the Superintendent of Police in Ropar, Punjab, during the tumultuous 1980s. I was quite anxious about meeting him because he could easily have expressed his disapproval of our portrayal of that era.”
He elaborated, “However, I was deeply moved when he expressed that our film transported him back to the 1980s. He even inquired, ‘How did we manage to capture the exact nuances of what transpired in Punjab during that time?’ – that was an enormous compliment for me!”
Imtiaz also reminisced about the enchanting experience of the “Amar Singh Chamkila” premiere.
“While filming at Liberty Cinema, an iconic old theatre in Bombay, I insisted on hosting the premiere there, despite suggestions against it for marketing reasons. Diljit was supportive and offered to invest half the funds,” he joked.
He added, “Fortunately, Monika (Shergill) supported the idea of an old-style premiere. The event turned out to be absolutely delightful, with attendees braving heavy traffic and tough conditions to be a part of it. It was genuinely a remarkable occasion.”
For those unfamiliar, “Amar Singh Chamkila”, directed by Imtiaz Ali, features Diljit Dosanjh portraying the legendary Punjabi singer, alongside Parineeti Chopra as Amarjot Kaur. The music is composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics written by Irshad Kamli.
